Volunteer Newsletter by City Cast Chiba, Vol.1

Vol.1 - publishedon July 16, 2021

This newsletter was all translated by City Cast Chiba. The summery in the other languages are available soon.

"We would like to introduce how we are volunteering during the Olympic and Paralympic games from the volunteers' point of view!"

The project had begun with that in our mind.

Nobody had expected that the Olympics would be held without any spectators and started in an uncertain situation.
“City Cast Chiba”, a city-volunteer group for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, has been continuing their volunteering in the face of anxiety for the situation.
There are volunteers starting their challenges in spite of being in the trying time.
We will let you know how the we keep trying for the event success from the volunteers’ point of view by publishing newsletters from July to October. This will be five times in total, including the first number.

【Page 2】What we can do "NOW"!! - Last minutes Trainings at Narita Airport

“It is now less than 3 weeks until the Olympic Games start and the second Area Trainings (on-site training) has started for the volunteers at the airport.” This is what I was going to report but very unfortunately, the decision was made that the volunteer activities at the airport have been suspended during a state of emergency. Many of Olympic venues decided the games without spectators. It is very regretful that the volunteer activities at the Narita Airport area are still uncertain, but we do wish to inform you what we are able to convey right now.

During the training, we walked around the airport Terminal 2 and 3 in a half day from corner to corner to make sure various airport facilities.  We walked around the facilities with considering the various situation such as the guidance to the guests who urgently look for the information counter, a bus station, the multifunctional toilet – and the guidance to those who have the enough time to spend for visiting the Narita Animation Deck and Character Shops.  I used to work at the airport and thought that I am used to it, but I came to know and find other new points about the airport that I never knew before after a half day airport-tour, realized how large the Narita Airport is.

We also have been training for infection control by watching videos(e-learning). We strongly believe that acquiring knowledge and following rules will decrease the infection risk. These may lead to the best service that each volunteer can provide.

We interviewed Mr. Akira Yamada who is a member of City Cast and the leader of virtual tour in Chinese. Mr. Yamada not only works as an airport staff, but has been serving as a volunteer guide for more than ten years. We can definitely say that he is really a specialist in Narita Airport. "(From a ten years’ experience,) I got a kind of sense to find people who are in trouble. I would like to help them very much by using this sense,” he said confidently. Also, he has been making funny faces, so called "weird and funny face yoga" to increase his immune system. We surely hope that we can see his funny face with no mask soon.

Volunteer activities are still ON? - My view on e-learning training about infection control measures for City Cast-

“Is it safe to join in volunteering at Tokyo 2020 Olympic/Paralympic in COVID-19 pandemic?” This was my serious concern as a member of volunteers.  After I took the training, I could learn how I should support to make the event safe and secure as a member of volunteers by e-learning.
Video clearly explained in detail not only basic methods and notes of volunteer activities in preventing the infection as well as the particularities in each area of activity.

Key feedbacks from attendees:
-I could share in detail from basic control measures to actual and realistic case studies. I could make clear images of volunteer activities.
-It made us lighten a burden of our potential worry about volunteer activities.

Olympic Toach Bearer Intervew (First half)

City Cast Chiba intervewed one of the Olympic Toach Bearer, Mr.Tsuzuki.

Norihiko Tsuzuki (President of Earth Light Project / Chairman of NPO Origami,  Chiba University Master's Degree Program)

He has led the student group "Origami" since 2014, involving himself in planning of a variety of activities to promote Tokyo 2020 Games. He now thinks that he wants to breathe any dreams into Volunteers.

Q.What did you feel in participating the Toach Relay Celebration held in Chiba on July 3rd, 2021?

A. At the moment of lighting on my toach, I was really attached to the flame. I have thought all the time about Olympics flame, so I have mixed feelings. Although I could not run on the public road with the Olympic flame, I will never forget this moment . I will remember it for decades that we did try in the difficult period of COVID-19.  I think that this Olympic Game was definitely a rare case and everyone will look back "yah, it happened at that day!"

Q.You seemed attached the Olympic flame much, what the feelings?

A. I think that the flame has much power to keep the good relationship for people such as a birthday cake, fireworks, something like that. Gathering around the flame is the way the people have been accustomed to do so for a long time and the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games are one of the symbolic examples. It means that the flame has made the people impressed. I have heard that the specific technologies are used to make the the Olympic flame, such as the technology which allows the toarch not to put out the flame even when it is raining. When I saw it, I felt like "wow, finally I saw THE flame!". Get back on the track, the flame has the power to keep the good relationship to other people, and to bring back memories. It means, the flame has the power to move people’s strong emotion very much. I feel that the Olympic torch relay is a great event that put much focus on involving the emotion.(To be continued)
