 1) Hishikawa Moronobu Memorial Museum Special Exhibit "Seiji Togo" (Kyonan Town)

 One of Seiji Togo's paintings

Born in 1897 in Kagoshima, Seiji Togo spent the Taisho period’s flourishing romantic art style years in Tokyo, where his artistic talent bloomed. Later on, he traveled to Paris to study Western art styles, using the knowledge he acquired there to present at the Nika Art Exhibition, which attracted much attention. His original style which pursued the poetic sentiment of female beauty became widely accepted after World War II, and became established as a romantic and modern art style revolving around the female form which still has deep seated popularity even today.

In the museum, art by the founder of Japanese ukiyo-e who was born in Kyonan Town, Moronobu Hishikawa, is being widely displayed.

In this special exhibit, you will be able to experience the change in art styles between the early Edo-style depictions of beauty by Moronobu Hishikawa and Seiji Togo’s Showa period style of depicting the female form in a modern, poetic sense.

This exhibit was made possible through the cooperation of the Sonpo Japan Seiji Togo Art Museum.
