 1) Experience Kimono (Yukata) in Surfing Town Ichinomiya

All eyes will be on the beach for the Olympic surfing events in Ichinomiya, but the area in front of the train station is teeming with cultural, religious, and historical areas.

Volunteers that want to spread Ichinomiya’s cultural and historical appeals to visitors prepare yukata and assist visitors with putting them on. Why not experience Ichinomiya’s lesser known side? A paid tour of the town will also be held by "VISIT ICHINOMIYA".

Please let us know your opinions of the event so that we can provide the most convenient experience possible during the Olympics.

1. Friday, September 13 during the Tamasaki Shrine Great Festival

  • Reception and Yukata Dressing: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Suyahonke (Paid lunch is available at your request)
  • Yukata walking hours: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    1:30 p.m.: Watch portable shrines and sacred horses running on the street near the place of the reception.
    2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Make our way to Tsurigasaki beach by shuttle bus, which is the venue of the festival. ※Tsurigasaki beach is the venue of the surfing competition for the 2020 Olympics.

2. Sunday, October 13 during the 24th Sasuga Market

It is a local market held on the street in front of the gate of Tamasaki shrine where you can enjoy shopping local gourmet, general goods, and watching Japanese traditional performing arts.

  • Reception and Yukata dressing: 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Suyahonke
  • Yukata walking hours: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (1 minute on foot from dressing venue to Sasuga Market).
  • Location: Suyahonke (2987 Ichinomiya, Ichinomiya Town), in and around Tamasaki Shrine
  • Kimono Experience Fee: 500 yen (for cleaning)
  • Eligibility: Foreigners and Japanese alike; all are welcome. As long as the proper sizes are available, both adults and children are welcome.

 2) Yachimata Peanut Festival (Yachimata City)

The 2019 Yachimata Peanut Festival will be held on September 15 (Sun).

You will be able to taste a wide variety of peanuts including boiled oomasari peanuts which are only available this time of year as well as the famous Chiba Peanut “Chiba Handachi” and the new “Q Nut”. Fresh vegetables will also be sold.

Ginger ale using Yachimata-grown gingers will also be sold, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity and taste many delicacies!

Stage events

  • Performance by Yachimata Middle School Brass Band Club
  • Live performance by Yachimata’s own MEGU
  • Song performance by Yachimata’s own enka singer Misa Fujino, as well as the unveiling of a new song dedicated to peanuts, made with the collaboration with the Classical Japanese Dance Federation
  • Dance performance by the Yachimata City Kids’ Dance Group
  • Peanut quality testing games, peanut shell peeling games, peanut weight guessing competitions, etc. *Events may change in the event of inclement weather.

Ayumi Uekusa, a karate athlete from Yachimata, will also be at the event. Be sure to invite your friends!

  • Access: Ride the JR Sobu Line to Yachimata Station and leave the North exit
    If coming by car, a parking lot available *there is a limit to the amount of space available.

 3) Onjuku Spiny Lobster Festival (Onjuku Town)

During the allocated time period, participating restaurants will have special menus. Also, on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays during the time period, lobsters will be sold at the square in front of the Tsukinosabaku Memorial Hall. Further, on the day of the event, free lobster soup will be handed out, lobster grabbing will be held, and lobsters/lobster sets will be sold along with an open-air market.

Event: September 8 (Sun), October 6 (Sun)

  • Lobster set (2 lobsters, 2 turban shells) 4,000 yen/limited amount
  • Lobster grabbing (2 lobsters per person) 1 time, 2 lobsters 3,000 yen/limited amount
  • Free lobster soup, limited amount

Lobster sales: Every Saturday, Sunday, and holiday from September 14 (Sat) to October 27 (Sun) from around 9:30 – 13:30 (there is a limited amount, so be sure to arrive early).

  • Location: Square in front of the Tsukinosabaku Memorial Hall, participating restaurants in Onjuku
  • Access: 7 minutes on foot to the Tsukinosabaku Memorial Hall from Onjuku Station on the JR Sotobo Line

 4) Ryutetsu Beer Train (Nagareyama City)

A 1 day event using the trains of the Nagareyama Line.

You will be able to enjoy jazz performances, gourmet and drinks from various famous shops with the trains and train depot. A limited amount of tickets for the performances within moving trains will be sold as a set along with beer and snacks.

The “Cutout Lantern and Music Evening” event will be held on the same day near the location of this event, which will use the nearby Sengen Shrine’s kagura hall for jazz performances.

  • Date and time: Saturday, September 7, 15:00 - 21:00
  • Location: In and around Nagareyama Station on the Ryutetsu Nagareyama Line
  • Access: Keisei Bus from the Nagareyama-Ootakanomori Station West Exit on the Tsukuba Express Line, getting off at the “Nagareyama Station” stop
    Directly outside Nagareyama Station on the Ryutetsu Nagareyama Line
  • Admission: Free (jazz performances within moving trains are paid)

 5) Awa Kokushi Festival Tsurugaya Hachimangu Shrine Grand Festival [Awa Yawatan-machi] (Tateyama City)

The Tsurugaya Hachimangu Shrine Fall Festival boasts a 1,000 year history and is the largest festival in the Awa region. Currently called, “Yawatan-machi”, it is designated as a Chiba Prefecture Intangible Cultural Asset.

On the September 14th (Sat), 10 shrines’ mikoshi (portable shrine)will be assembled and paraded. On the following day, 4 dashi floats and 1 Ofune float arrive at the shrine and the 10 mikoshi return to their respective shrines. Tsurugaya Hachimangu’s mikoshi will be carried to Yawata beach where the traditional ritual ceremony called “Hojoe” will be held.

This two day grand festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors.
