 GOTCHA ICHINOMIYA CHIBA OPEN powered by GRAVITY CHANNEL

     Ichinomiya's Tsurigasaki Beach, venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Paralympic Surfing Competition, prepares for the World Surfing League Women's QS 1000, Men's QS 6000, and Under 12 Super Kids Challenge. Ichinomiya Chiba Open 2018 that will be held May 19th to the 27th. It’s a great opportunity to catch professional athletes in action. 
     Trials for the event will start on the 19th with the Men’s QS 6000 competition getting underway on the 21st (Mon), followed by the Women’s QS 1000 on the 24th (Thu), and the Super Kids Challenge on the 26th (Sat) and 27th (Sun). More than 200 athletes (144 Men, 32 Women, 16 U-12) will compete for over 17 million Japanese Yen in prize money and prestige at this World Surfing League sponsored event.

 Fair Trade Festa Chiba 2018

     Fair trade is a movement that aims to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development through supply chain transparency. By purchasing fair trade products, you can help to ensure that the people who produce handmade crafts receive a fair compensation for their labor.

     Fair Trade Festa Chiba 2018 will be held in Chiba City on Sunday, May 20th. The festival will showcase a variety of fair trade organizations, displays, products, food, and more!  1) Minamiboso Firefly Fantasia: Fireflies of the Mountains and the Ocean/ Shirahama Flower Park (Minamiboso City)

     The Minamiboso City Onsen Union, made up of 17 member establishments, is holding a special event in which visitors can learn about bioluminescence found in the mountains and in the ocean. Visitors can take a stroll inside the great dome of the Shirahama Flower Park and observe genji (Japanese) fireflies. The exhibit will also introduce bioluminescent algae and have a light show at the special exhibit corner. Take a moment to relax and bask in the wondrous glow of nature’s bioluminescence.

 2) Suigo Sawara Iris Festival/Suigo Sawara Ayame Park (Katori City)

     The Suigo Sawara Ayame Park is an attraction where you can enjoy the greenery and blue waters of the Suigo Tsukuba Quasi-National Park. 1.5 million hanashobu (Japanese irises) of 400 varieties in full bloom will color the entire park.
     The Iris Festival will be held from Saturday, May 26 to Sunday, June 24. Within the park, the irises are divided according to the different varieties, such as those with stylish names like Fujibakama and Dainagon, separating them into bunches of white, purple, and yellow. Edo, Ise, and Higo varieties of irises can also be found in abundance here. 
     Also, visitors can cruise around the park on small boats called sappa boats (for an additional fee). The irises from the boat are a must-see! A trademark vision of this season is the ferrywomen dressed in patterned kimono, red aprons, tabi shoes, and triangular amigasa hats, steering the boats using large poles called sao.
     During the Iris Festival, sappa boat cruises are operated every day from 8:30 to 18:00 (closed in the case of rain).

 3) 16th Katsuura Port Bonito Festival (Katsuura City)

     Katsuura Fishing Port brings in the second largest catch of fish in the Prefecture after Choshi Fishing Port. From spring to summer, fishermen follow the bonito traveling north past Katsuura. Katsuura is especially well known for its catches of Bonito.
     On Saturday, June 2, the Katsuura City will hold the 16th Katsuura Port Bonito Festival where visitors can enjoy a variety of bonito and seafood related events.

 4) 12th Sosa Garden Tree Festival (Sosa City)

     Chiba Prefecture, and in particular Sosa City, is famous for ueki, also known as garden trees or “macro bonsai.” The prefecture has designated growers with exceptional skills and knowledge as “Certified Traditional Arborists.” Over half of these certified growers are located in Sosa City. In addition, more than half of the trees designated as the top 100 precious wood garden plants in Chiba Prefecture are located in Sosa City.
     This Golden Week, the “bonsai city” welcomes visitors to the 12th Sosa Garden Tree Festival. Garden trees, flowers, decorative plants, potted garden trees, saplings, and more will be available for purchase for cheap at the market. This event is a great opportunity to brighten up your home this spring and see one of the highlights of Chiba Prefecture.

 5) Rose Festival 2018 / Keisei Rose Garden (Yachiyo City)

     Welcome spring with the beauty and fragrance of 10,000 roses. The Kesei Rose Garden will be celebrating their Rose Festival between Friday, May 11th and Sunday, June 17th. The gardens eloquently display 1,600 different types of roses. There will also be a variety of performances and events throughout the festival. For a full list of events, please visit the Kesei Rose Garden Website.

 6) See Diamond Fuji (Tateyama City)

     Diamond Fuji is when the setting sun aligns with the summit of Mt. Fuji and shimmers like a diamond. If the weather conditions are just right, this phenomenon is visible just twice a year: in May and July. This May, take advantage of this rare chance to see a beautiful sight from Tateyama, a city known for its picturesque sunsets and exquisite views of Mt. Fuji from across the bay.

 Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Narita Airport at the Museum of Aeronautical Science (Shibayama Town)

     This month on May 20th, Narita Airport will be celebrating 40 years of operation. From Saturday, May 19th to Sunday, July 22nd, the Museum of Aeronautical Science will be featuring photographs and commemorative items that depict the history and changes in aviation that have occurred at Narita over the past 40 years. Located right next door to the airport, the museum is convenient to visit for those traveling to and from Narita Airport.

 Spring Festival at Chiba Prefectural Boso-no-Mura (Sakae Town)

     During Golden Week, Chiba Prefectural Boso-no-Mura will celebrate their Spring Festival from May 3rd to the 5th. There will be many performances to enjoy and crafts to try for the whole family. The park will also be decorated with carp-shaped streamers in celebration of Children’s Day.
